Live video now on CNN. From a distance looks like the plane is only about half there.
Looked @ the flight aware path. It made a short approach. Definitely looks like it had priority going in, or some problem while airborne vs just a really hard landing resulting in a crash.
initial media reports are always such a crapshoot.....theyre actually quoting eyewitnesses that say the tail "just fell off" on final and the plane came to a rest upside down. well clearly the plane isn't upside down and if the tail had "just fallen off" the plane would be in the water due to the 28s in SFO being short water approaches like LGA and NEW
LiveATC is ridiculously slow right now.
Early speculation, but this looks a lot like the British Airways 777 flight that lost power on final.

Curious to see what the NTSB finds in days, months to come. Hope everyone is ok.
That's the first thing that came to mind.
From the degree field he barely made the runway.....something was wrong with the plane before it landed.
Yup, looks like it might have lost power, they held it off as long as possible then dragged the tail all the way in. Ice crystals in the fuel clogging the fcoc.
Oh wait, never mind, witnesses are saying the wing fell off, man I was waaaay off!
Just listened to the recordings on LiveATC. They called a 7 mile final and were cleared to land. No sign of anything wrong til they were on the ground. The pilots were talking to ATC after the impact. No clues on what went wrong.
MY PRAYERS GO OUT TO ALL PEOPLE INVOLVED!
Didn't they order some modifications or something to make sure that wouldn't happen again?
And from the pic it looks like the tail did indeed fall off somewhere along the way. Cause, or effect? Maybe it's designed to do that to avoid the usual embarrassment when the tail with the airline's logo is the only thing left sticking out of a smoking hole. Just a theory.
It was well south of dumbarton bridge even. It's not a short approach at all. Check out Thursdays arrival it was shorter.

Looks like some part, either gear or tail, first impacted the berm.
