Default TCAS Test problem...

Ok, you guys out there that like to degrade people for asking question or make them feel dumb for not knowing everything stay away. I know you guys were born with a CFM in your hands and can never do any wrong.

For those of you who remember being new at one time and had someone nicely help you, I'd appreciate your help.

When doing the TCAS test, I know you hold the button until it says "TCAS Test" then release and wait for the "Pass". Well I've done this before and it will complete the pass portion and then it will leave a VSI climb/decend command stuck on the VSI. Only way to fix is the reset.

Now I know you need to do the test in the Auto position, but I've had this error even when it is in the auto position.

Anyone else having this issue or is it just my luck.

If the answer is in some bulletin I've obviously not read, accept my humblest appologies for asking a dumb question, but could someone point me in the right direction.

Read the CFM. Vol. 2. Oh crap, I've become the kind of person on here that I hate! Sorry man, Ctrl+Alt+Del is probably the best fix-all.

no need to be appologetic about asking a question. people that give you a hard time about a question usually don't know the answer.

having said that, I don't know the answer either. never heard of this. didn't find it in vol 2 - maybe icarus can enlighten us.

did it do it on your screen only or CA too?
did you try
1. turn xpdr off (not stby - OFF) for a few minutes, then test again.
2. EICAS test (press and hold the RA/TST button)
3. asking MX
4. letting the CA know so s/he can write it up. it's a failed test.

a ctrl-alt-delete usually works for almost anything, but it hides the problem. if everyone did that, it wouldn't be in any logbook, mx would never know, and it would never get fixed. if you let mx know they'll probably just tell you to do a reset anyway... but they'll have a record of it and will be able to see a trend if you're not the only one.

just remember - there are no dumb questions - only dumb people

Turn the transponder on and that will clear the VSI. At the bottom of the test results box that pops up if you hold the test button down that long, is a statement that tells you to activate the xpdr to clear the display.

I figured I might have held it a bit too long...THANKs for the info. It was just one of those random things that me and CA couldn't figure out what went wrong.

Yariv, thanks for the help. It was some questionable situations; outstation and Mx said to do the reset and whatever the CA did to redo the test worked the second time out so we didn't question it and moved on.
