Distracted Flying Bill S.2745
The senate has introduced legislation as a direct result of the events surrounding the recent Airbus overfly of Minneapolis. This bill is known as the “Distracted Flying Act” and was introduced by Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND), the chairman of the Senate Aviation Subcommittee. It is co-sponsored by Senators Klobuchar (D-MN), Franken (D-MN), Lautenberg (D-NJ), and Rockefeller (D-WV). The bill would prohibit the “personal use” of laptops and personal wireless communications devices on the flight deck during aircraft operations. The prohibition does not apply to the use of laptops or personal wireless communications devices for purposes directly related to the operation of the aircraft, for emergency, safety related, or employment related communications.
ALPA has been meeting with a number of members of Congress and staff in response to an earlier draft of this bill as well as other ideas floating around the hill, such as cockpit video recorders. Had we not weighed in, the language of S.2745, would have prohibited laptop computers from the flight deck altogether. As far as video recorders are concerned, ALPA maintains its firm position that the equipment is NOT necessary and could actually be a detriment to safety. Members and staff have thus far listened and have heard us on this issue, as no legislation on video recorders has been introduced at this time. Stay tuned for further developments.
I guess something as silly as this comes as little suprise given that Lautenburg dude could barely even throw together a sentence in the Colgan hearings.....
Couldn't help but laugh at the bill's title though!!!!
WTF????
I'd be a big fan of being able to crank out the Iphone and get a radar picture of whats beyond the range and capabilities of our amazing onboard radar..... but then we'd probably get called into the CPO because we logged into the onboard wifi while on duty..... Even though we are utilizing "all available resources" as required by the Feds..... But then again I know some peeps will abuse it.
MUST READ
Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.
"The prohibition does not apply to the use of laptops or personal wireless communications devices for purposes directly related to the operation of the aircraft, for emergency, safety related, or employment related communications."
