I'm a dyslexic atheist: I don't believe in dog.

How about we all watch this next Wednesday, the 20th and feed this thread with new material?

http://www.cnn.com/CNN/Programs/presents/after.jesus

Should be pretty interesting no matter what you think and give a common ground on some historical data.

That's the mistake "ya'll" keep making. Christianity doesn't try to compete. It never has.

I can't believe I'm back here....

[quote="Yariv"]
divine intervention says that statistically tornadoes always hit trailer parks, and statistically it doesn't make sense that this happens randomly, therefore the tornado was steered by a force beyond our comprehension. furthermore, there is a reason it was steered there, probably because someone in the trailer park did something the higher power didn't like. people that live in the trailer park say that there must be a reason they were punished, even if this reason is not understood (it's god's will, or a test of their faith)

You're just making stuff up here. You also are trying to speak for something with which you do not agree, and you have limited knowledge. Christianity does not espouse this.

Just ask the Kansas Education Board if they're trying to compete. They may not represent all of Christianity, but they are competing in the name of religion against science, and they control the education of many unsuspecting children.

of course I'm making stuff up, this is an analogy I made up to make a point. The point was that our point of view is very narrow, and it's easy to think there's a god that looks down on us and controls what happens to us specifically. But when you're flying at FL370 and can see half the state, you realize that each person down there is just a part of the big picture, and their life is just one of millions affected by nature. No "one" or "God" or higher power cares about them specifically (IMHO). The tornado makes that point. The reaction to the tornado (as in "it's god will my house was destroyed") is, in my experience, typical of religious people and often doesn't come from themselves but from their ministers or pastors, in an effort to ease their suffering. if you disagree, then spell out what you disagree with, rather than saying I have limited knowledge in the matter (compared to you, I assume)

Merry Xmas BTW

Hey numbnuts, that's more or less what this entire 33 page saga has been about. I HAVE cracked open the bible, I've read most of it and listened to ramblings from its pages throughout the 6 years I attended a christian high school.

And what I found was a book of fairytales, most of which have no SEMBLENCE of anything close to reality, written about 2000 years ago not by any sort of GOD, but by men, who had no idea about the world or the way it worked. These were people who had no way to describe the world they saw around them except by saying that there was some all knowing, all powerful presence watching over everyone.

What a crock of s**t. The fact that anyone still believes this baloney after all these years, with everything we know today is absolutely laughable.

Why don't you put down your bible for a few minutes, pull your head out of the sand, and take a look at what's really going on!

Heh heh, it's funny, b/c one can also say the fact that we can be so arrogant as to think that we now know everything there is to know is absolutely laughable.
