I can be in the exact location and have service with "normal" EDGE with the 3G turned off and then when I turn on the 3G, many many times it says "No Service". Apple got everything wrong with this 3G phone just because they were in a rush to put the **** thing out. I've put other 3G phones right next to the iPhone, like the HTC and Samsung, where they both have 3G service and the iPhone reads "No Service". Well I guess we'll have to wait until tomorrow to see if Apple fixes this major issue with the phone or not, supposedly a major update (2.1) is do out tomorrow. Let's cross our fingers.
In the meantime, call AT&T and get a full refund on the internet portion of your bill.

When your going to be using it in your car for a period of time that you need the GPS, simply got to
Settings, General, Auto-lock, and select Never. That's what I do when I have it in my car and need to use the GPS.
While I completely agree that the 3G is a POS I'm still not sure why. Places like Columbus, Oh and Idaho Falls, I've had full bars. Places like DOWNTOWN L.A.!! I can't get crap. I think it might have some thing to do with the number of 3G users in a particular area. The iPhone 3G radio might be a bit weaker, but I think it will do just fine once AT&T updates their equipment.
I had the old one since day one and wasn't going to upgrade, till my GF broke hers and bought me the 3G. So far both have still been the best phone I have ever used.
You mention the 2.1 upgrade. That is the beauty of the iPhone. Some one who bought an iPhone the first day or today (minus some small hardware differences) has pretty much the exact same, most up to date phone in their pocket (software wise).
Sorry for the thread derail. I was bored.
