I was thinking the other day (dangerous, I know...)

Think about how much toll booths contribute to so-called man-made "global warming".

Requiring vehicles to make unnecessary stops when they would have merely continued at present speed causes the wasteful use of expensive fuel and increases emmissions.

The question is, would our strongest political screamers of global warming be willing to give up the toll booths?

On the same note, nose abatement procedures that we follow, in some cases, do the same thing. There are a few out in California that cause otherwise unnecessary climb/descent profiles and turning...while the plane is configured and low altitude.

Would they be willing to "do their part" and tolerate the noise in exchange for a lower carbon footprint?

interesting questions. I ignore both tollbooths and noise abatement. : )

A lot of tollways are going to open-road tolling which allows you to stay at full speed and the transponder in your car allows you to charge the toll to your account.

Yeah, because Lord knows that they won't go without their tax. Of course, the transponders have to be manufactured, installed, maintained, the car has to carry the weight of it (small for the one car, expensive collectively for the millions of cars out there) and the system has to be powered, the airwaves are filled with additional transmissions, the equipment to monitor and collect the various transmissions has to be installed and monitored, requiring technicians and equipment to patrol the state to ensure said equipment is functional, etc...

Does anyone here commute on I-10 West in Houston? Wasn't it nice that they came in and started the big expansion and adding all those lanes? Then as the project starts getting closer to completion you start to see these toll booths going in where most people thought was a second HOV lane.

How's that for a smack in the face? Taking one of hte most congested freeways that I know of and using precious lane space to make a toll lane. Bastards!
