Question No meal for standby

I had 2 friends fly on mainline using buddy passes. The flight had at least 30 seats open and when they got their bording passes she wrong "no meal" on their boarding passes.

There's a possibility they weren't cartered correctly, but no matter the reason what's the purpose of writing it on the boarding pass since the FAs never see it?

Maybe the agent just meant it as a poorly executed hint to a non-rev that they are tight on meals and they should leave them for the "paying" passengers first. Better ways to ask the non-rev, but I don't see anything wrong with the request.

I ask the FA if there are enough meals or snacks before I take one (if I can get the words out before they throw it on my tray table,) even on a vacation pass or DHing. Just something I picked up non-revving (buddy passes) growing up; I just thought it was standard non-rev courtesy.

Granted...Buddy passes are more like 1/2 revs now with the new fee structure, but they are still non-revs in the end. Why should a full fare passenger miss out on the food for a non-rev?

I dunno, seems like an extra bag of peanuts is not going to break the airline. I suspect that soon mainline will start charging for drinks, meals etc. Better off bringing your own food and drink nowadays

As a non-rev it is always a good move/respectful to ask the FA if they have enough meals for everybody on board before you are served.

what happens if you paid 100 bucks for a buddy pass and a revenue passenger paid 79 bucks?

Wonder if "no meal" was printed on everyone's boarding pass for that flight -- rev & non-rev alike -- and simply meant that no food was being served on the flight for any passenger?

Sort of like when you book a ticket on-line, it tells you whether a meal, snack or beverage-only service is being provided. That info on the boarding pass would just be an additional reminder to the customer to feed the pie hole before boarding.

Not sure if that's correct or not. Just a thought.

No, it is considered etiquette. It is how you should behave when flying non-rev.

You are the ones that give the rest of us a bad name. I started with CAL 20 years ago and that is the way it was taught when it comes to non-reving. When the FA is in the middle of their meal/snack service you ALWAYS ask "if you have enough" when asked if you want the meal/snack being offered. In the 20 years in this business, I have only been denied a meal/snack once, and that was on a flight from DEN/SFO they were short catered. The FA's appreciate it and they will try and take care of you.
