JackA$$! how much does it cost to be furloughed?? No furloughing here at SWA. I would pay five times as much for my type as I did to have my job here! You just don't understand the piece of mind knowing when I show up to work my job is still here, and my paychecks always show up in time! Don't be jealous that we didn't hire you, they know a jacka$$ when they talk to one!

As for you other guys at Express, I wish each and everyone of you good luck! I truly enjoyed my job at Express and it really sucks to see what is going on there, If any of you get the chance to come to SWA don't even hesitate. My first year I make just about what I was when I left as a 8yr capt. Second yr pay you make more than that 8yr capt pay at Express (almost there thank god). I paid for my type and have no regrets I'd do it again without blinking and at the time I left Express was in good shape. Get the type and get out if you can. I really am not a Southwest basher. Never interviewed there, but it looks like it would be a ton a fun to work there.

However, it seems with oil heading higher and higher if you look at what Southwest has done--made air travel affordable for a such a huge number of people that could simply not afford it at all before there was a Southwest-- then how are these people going to pay when the hedging eventually escalates (and it will) to the breaking point?

I guess the question is, will the average Southwest passenger still be capable of paying in 3-5 years? Airplane travel is speed travel. There used to be a premium for speed. Southwest cut that premium. Will Amtrack and Greyhound resume their former more cost friendly place in the lives of the American traveller?

I think the smarter choice may be to go fly airplanes for the rich people. Someday soon they are all who will be able to afford flying again.

Really, Southwest's service isn't any worse than any other airline and their ontime percentage is pretty good. Compare them to American, LAX to SAT - no pillows or blankets on either, drinks on both, Southwest is more likley to get you there on time - plus it's not like they've been "free" latley if you've looked at their prices.

Plus I know my Dad's used them for business travel where they've been the only direct flight in a market, and he/his company won't go international on US airlines because the service is subpar (I just got to watch him talk to his travel person because a flight he was on got delayed so he needed a new way to get to India, and it was pretty funny watching him say no to CAL and NWA) - so they are pretty picky. I guess the point I'm making is that when they have to best schedule or are the only dirrect flight (and they are to alot of airports) even the pickiest people will hop on SWA.

I guess the question is, is your dad the average Soutwest passenger? Does the typical Southwest passenger often choose to not go slumming to Europe or Asia on a US carrier?

The question I asked is do you think flying is going to become just too expensive a luxury again for the large majority of Americans? If so, Southwest will need to reinvent what they do and/or who they serve.

Some of you guys are missing the big picture. Analysts expect SWA to make over 400 mil in profit this year. Why? Obviously hedging, but also because every day that fuel goes higher the SW competative advantage increases. SW may have carried low fare passengers in the past but come this fall, with more bankrupt airlines and less lift, ticket prices will be higher and SW will be moving to strengthen it's market share. Our passenger demographics will obviously adjust as well....SW is already getting lots of business passengers.

I have mixed emotions about that...

On one hand, I would love to see the airlines go back to the days where people dressed up because it meant something to go for an "airplane ride." But on the other hand, I'm a jeans, t-shirt, and flip-flops guy who longs for the day that I will purchase a ticket and won't have to dress up to board an airplane. Quite the paradox for me here...

Driving one's car isn't getting any cheaper.

I would guess that it is moving up at the same rate as the ticket price, in a relative fashion, i.e. it still is cheaper to fly relative to driving a car the same distance. Of course with the vagaries of airline pricing...per usual.

I'm sure WN will be around for a while yet...and I like wearing wife beaters when I travel, you got a problem with that?

And don't mind the mustard stains...
