The way to save the most amount of fuel is to climb as quickly as possible to altitude, assuming zero wind, fly at LRC, then start a descent angle that would give you Vfs all the way to the airport at idle. Would be a slow flight, but you would burn a lot less and make a lot more on overs!

How about ... none of the above?? Just to throw a monkey in the wrench ... I like a 2000 fpm descent planned using TOD groundspeed to just make desired altitude (e.g. 20,000' to loose, groundspeed 480, begin descent ~ 80 nm out). It takes into account winds ... allows me to do any ATC directed slow-down without using the boards ... and still allows me to make it if unexpectedly entering icing conditions. I like to save gas by configuring as late / little as possible and NOT reaching 10,000' > 20 nm from the field when expecting an opposite direction approach, along with the fairly normal stuff (directs, minimal 2 engine taxi time, ensuring proper rudder trim, etc.).
