Default MSY RW19 ships or no ships on river.....

The ATOGS book has two pages for runway 19 in MSY. One for "ships on the river" (SHPS) and one without. How the **** are we supposed to know if there are going to be ships on the ******* river when we depart? Can't see the river from the gate. The difference in allowable weight is around 1,000lbs (just a guess, don't really remember actual number) I'm shocked there isn't another page for "big-rigs on the freeway" How are we supposed to find out this critical tid bit of info?????

And why no TC/DD on J15 between corona and ABQ. The route is brown, damit. Brown. Terrian above 8k. Dispatch knows nothing....

Just because the terrain is above 8k doesnt mean you necessarily need it. Is it in the FOM that anytime you fly over terrain of 8000 ft or higher you will have one or the other? Or is that just a number an instructor threw out. Remember you dont need it until you hit the ???????????(cant remember the name) altitude, FL230 or FL240. IF the performance software has figured out that from your cruising altitude of xxx and you canning an engine and drifting down to fl230 will put you in an area that is not 8000 ft, you probably dont need it and wont get it.

As far as the SHIPS vs. no SHIPS there are alot of airports that have that actually. PWM, PHL(I think), I've seen a few others as well. PHL actually has it on the ATIS I believe.

As far as J15, the reason I ask, is because on the enroute chart legend, it says that routes highlighted in brown are associated with either TC or DD. J15 is brown for about half the way between AUS and ABQ. And ABQ has a fair amount of terrain. I'm sure flight standards has a reason for not having a chart for that route though. And as far as the ships go, I didn't know any other airport had that option. Clearance at MSY had no idea what I was talking about when I asked them about it.

Send a pilot report to GS and ask him why that route doesnt have DD/TC, if he cant answer it he will find somebody who can.

I asked MSY ATC about where to find out about the ships, and they had no idea what I was talking about. Probably got someone new that day on the radio.........wondering why this crazy ******* pilot wants to know about ships on a river.
