Medical Question

I've been reading about a disagreement when it comes to medicals and i just wanted some other opinions.... If you have a First Class Medical, using it as an FO would as a Commercial Pilot not ATP and it is older than 6 months, but less than 12 months... would an airline hiring consider you a liar if you told them you had a current First Class Medical?? I mean an 8 month old First Class medical is still a current First Class medical if used for a non ATP, Commercial pilot right?

The First Class is only good for six months. After that it is no longer a First Class medical no matter what seat you're occupying. I don't think the airlines would consider you a liar but more of a concern should be they may question your knowledge about a very important subject. I would suggest getting a new medical before coming to the interview.

You are fine with that medical. The class of medical never changes, in this case first does not become a second class medical after six months. The change is in the priviledges you can exercise. You have a current first class medical for which you can exercise only commercial priviledges....

that is how most of the FOs here operate, so I would say dont worry about it. Just watch out if it lapses during training...hard to schedule a medical in the middle of that.

FAR 61.23 defines this medical issue but i was just looking for some other thoughts...

Mitch is correct, once a first class always a first class. Just beware. When interviewing SOME airlines, including XJT, want a "First Class Medical with First Class Priviliges". Don't do what I did and skim right over it. I did not "read" the second half of the sentence until 3:00 the day before the interview. I called about 20 AME's and no luck. Got a call back from one that actually lives a couple miles from me. I showed up at his condo for a quick and painless 1st class with the guy after about 5 min max.
Anyway you may want to go out and get a new one if you are looking for jobs.

Thanks for the speedy replies... but still, First Class Privlages for an SIC would still be a 12 month medical... I plan on getting a new one anyways but i thought i would just throw that out there.

No, not quite: SIC only requires second class priviliges which is what your first class is good for after 6 months.
In other words after the 6 month it is a 1st class medical with 2nd class priviliges which is all you will need as an FO.

So at what point in upgrade training should I have the 1st class medical (I have one now, just with 2nd class privileges)....I would think before the oral, right? Or day one of ground school do they ask you for a copy of it....?
