You are absolutely on the right track. I think for the most part, most people think, "UGGGGGHH...Manu-wark". Me personally, I found it difficult to get a direct flight from IAH-EWR when I was commuting; I found out quickly that commuting and crashpadding are not for me. I live in Houston, so being based at home only makes sense, but for the short time I was in Newark, I enjoyed the flying immensly. GREAT learning experience since the closest thing I'd ever seen to ice was in my margarita...I cut my flying teeth chasing t'storms in the south and in Mexico.
I do believe you can hold a line faster in Newark and there are a couple of guys from my class that bid EWR just so they can get good lines.
The only stupid question is the one unasked or the one coming outta my fat mouth...
Hope that helps your curiosity.

What's wrong with Newark is that it's across the river from NYC, so, EVERYTHING in a 50 mile radius is expensive. That's compared to almost the rest of the country.
It might be the fastest base to hold a line, with CLE shrinking, but don't quote me on that one.
It does seem that in this company, wherever you're based you love it.

Also, for a commuter, EWR seems to go into ground stops more frequently than the other to bases. So for a new guy on probabtion, many don't want to tempt the MT Gods.

It is a ood commute if you can live were you can drive to EWR if you have to, as flights in and out are always ground stopped, there are a ton of early morning reports and late returns for even line holders. Speaking of line holding though, I got a regular (not relief) line withing 3 months of coming there, was on reserve for 2 months.

That makes no sense at all, expensive is a relative word. That's like the only word people know...expensive as compared to what? If you take rent/housing out of the equation (supply and demand), everything is inline with rest of the country. It's more expensive because the state of NJ is about the size of the city of Houston (i'm being facetious) yet has one of the highest population per square mile. Obviously there's a reason why everyone chooses to stay in the area, and I'm not talking about the city of Newark itself, but the entire NY/NJ area.
If you commute, no matter where it is, you probably won't like it, as it is usually much better to be able to drive back and forth between home and work.
The comments you hear from people not liking a place are usually from people who are not even from around that area. I'm sure you'll hear most people from IAH complain about EWR and CLE, people from EWR complain about IAH and CLE, and so forth.

They should be spending nothing. The company provides parking at your base.
