How would you prove myspace was the basis for their decision?

Maybe if the HR person who makes the no decision has a personal bias towards something on somebody's profile, but it's not really a show stopper for the job applied for, then it becomes the candidates knowledge.

We can all agree that a person like that has no business what so ever in an HR department. Like I said, under certain circumstances, it seems like it could get ugly.

You as an applicant would never know. For example look at how many people apply here. On paper we are all almost the same. Some have vast more experience and some don't. Generally the thumbs up or thumbs down comes from your personal interview. The "would I like to sit in the cockpit with this person test" If you have a bunch of stupid sh!t on your MySpace page or similar social networking site you might not even get the call. No phone call, you have no idea why. Are we all going to start suing because we didn't get hired someplace.

Look at the mayor from that small town in Washington. She had some pictures of her in lingerie on her MySpace page. God forbid she actually looked good for her age, was in shape, etc, etc. A bunch of fat lazy f$cks forced her out of office. The pictures had nothing to do with her ability to do her job. People made judgments and the rest is history.

I am not saying everyone has to pull their stuff offline. Just think about what you are doing and how it may effect you in the future.

First off, I am not defending myspace, or whatever people put on there. It's got to be one of the silliest things to ever come out of the cyber generation is you ask me.

Also, I am not talking about jobs like ours where there are 100's (or thousands) of applicants, and interview criteria is much more objective than something smaller, like backstabbing corporate America can be.

The type of example I'm trying to illustrate would be if you had 4-5 people all gunning for one position, and they all know somebody on the inside, and it somehow got back to the candidate that some idiot made a decision based purely on what was on the cadidates "hey world, look at me, I NEED attention" page. Even if every other candidate had one as well, just not as colorful.

Your example of the mayor is also a perfect example.

Make sense?

Not arguing with you. Just expanding on my original post. I too generally agree the social networking stuff is pretty dumb. I have a MySpace page mainly to look at all the music artists. I have a facebook page but don't really use it either. I do use LinkedIn for business networking as well as Plaxo Pulse. Places like MySpace have dumbed down the meaning of "Friend" and just emphasize the stupidity of all the reality tv and look at me stuff as you mentioned. Sadly there is no turning back.
