Default Deferring interview?

Quick question. Has anyone had to defer an interview date after being contacted by ExpressJet HR? I got the call today to set up an interview after faxing my resume in on Wed, but I can't interview before the end of May because of commitments to my current employer. I was told that I was going to be put on the list to be contacted in June, but if I defer a second time I'll have to reapply. I really hope I didn't blow the opportunity to work at ExpressJet because I can't get the time off to interview until next month!

You might have to get sick or something... Smaller operators tend to be real stuffy about giving people time of for an interview.

You really really want to get "sick". Seniority is everything. A month's difference in interview dates could mean a year's difference in upgrade time. Or the difference in being furloughed or not being furloughed should things go that way (not that I think they will, but I've been furloughed twice - I'm a pessimist).

Sounds like you really don't want the job.

Find the time-If I were in HR, "commitments to a present employer" does not sound like a valid reason. You do want to work here, right?

FYI, "commitments to my present employer", a Part 121 airline, was good enough excuse to have them find me an interview date that did work! Of course, that was 5 years ago, but it should be a good enough excuse now.

After all, Express would appreciate you not calling in sick to go interview somewhere.

Other than that, make the time as it has been recommended.

See captainChet, that's just it....my "commitment to my present employer" is a Part 121 airline. I'm glad someone else on here has had to make the same decision that I just had to make. If I weren't in long term training right now I would have tried to get the interview on a date that fell on a day off or worst case taken a personal leave day (my company is pretty good about granting those if you need it). But I just started sim training and won't be done until May 30th....then IOE. So realistically I couldn't interview until next month anyways; they just weren't calling for June interviews yet so that's why they put me on the "to be contacted next month" list. I even asked if there were going to be interviews on May 31st because I have that day off as of now. Trust me I wish it hadn't worked out this way because I really do want to work for XJT...but I'm just not going to screw up what I have going, in case I botch the interview and don't get hired. And like captainChet said, I don't think XJT would appreciate it if I had called in sick for a sim session to go interview somewhere else...so that's why I made the decision that I made.

To further what I was thinking, you are in a real Catch 22 spot! Like you say, you don't want to loose your current position if you don't get the offer here, on the other hand seniority is everything! A super tough choice.

One little complication is that you are in training. That's a question I'm sure you will be asked as to why you want to leave when you have just started!! Another tough spot. Sometimes the timing just plain sucks!

If you explained your decision to the person on the phone and they blew you off, well so be it. Ultimately, your integrity is what you have and by all means keep that intact. In the long run, that will be one of your best assets!!

Good luck and yes, this is really a great place to work.
