Default Class Deferral

How does recruiting view deferring the first offered class date for the next available class? I'm just curious since my current employer wants a bare minimum 2 week notice, ideally three.

I understand the loss of seniority and it's repercusions.

You've already accepted a class date from ExpressJet, right? Without knowing the details, I'd meet that obligation. Just curious, what do you do now where they really want a 2-week minimum notice?

I know some people who didn't take the first date, but they told them when initially offered. I took the first date, it was 3 days after my interview. My employer wasn't happy, and I didn't want to leave them like that, but they also were on a steep downslope and went out of business shortly after I left (coudn't run it without me  ). If you already accepted a date I would be reluctant to change it, though I don't think it would get you fired. You could probably call training scheduling and just ask how big of an issue it would be.

PS
Just so you don't think I just bailed without a second thought, I actually put a lot of thought into it and was asked at my interview what the impact would be. At the time we had way too many pilots at my company and I had already had some conversations with the CP there. I was trying to leverage for a different position and was told "If you think someone will put you in a turbine with your time, go there" (I had 1300/600 with 350 in large piston aircraft over 20,000lbs and everyone was hiring in 2000).

I haven't even interviewed yet...just weighing my options in the event I get offered the job. I would rather not say what I do right now that requires ample notice, I'm just trying to plan how to handle it in the interview and not compromise my chances of losing the job. Some airlines are very touchy about these things.

When I interviewed late last year there were two class dates available. They told us up front what they were and how many slots needed to be filled in each. There were classes starting the two following Mondays and the interview was on a Tuesday. Instead of taking the first available class date, I took the one that gave me the ability to give almost two weeks notice to my then-current employer. Keep in mind you will have a travel day prior to your 1st day of class.

I told the interviewers that while I really wanted to accept the earlier date, I also wanted to be fair to my current employer and give them as much notice as possible. They told me that they expect the same from their employees and had no problem with that. They did call a few days later asking if I could come to the earlier class and I had to decline again, but they were cool with that.

When you interview, you should be willing to take one of the classes they say are available. I have no idea how they'd react if you said you wanted a class date even later than what is offered. Tread carefully on that one.
