Default Life on the road...

For a potential new pilot, what is life on the road like? Hotels, food, nightlife, sleep time, etc.....

Any stories would be great!

You're going to get a wide range of answers, due to the wide range of people, length and location of the overnight, etc....

On a short overnight I usually just eat and go to bed, or maybe just go to bed...depends. Nightlife depends on how long you have. Getting into YUL at 9pm and not leaving for 15 hours has definite party potential, whereas arriving in MOV at 9pm and out at 6am does not. Some places are just boring all around, (LCH comes to mind) so I just sleep and catch up on TV. We have some great downtown overnights with lots to do such as IND, LGA, ATL, MSP but I find most of the time we are either in hotels near nothing to do or don't have time to do much. As the company tries to increase our productivity, we're seeing long overnights decrease over time.

Food is highly variable. I don't eat at hotels much, and often bring ramen or something to microwave, if the hotel has one. Some hotels are near malls or restaurants which is nice, and some are in the middle of nothing. Some hotel vans will take you to restaurants, some won't. The ORD airport hotel just hands you a bunch of takeout menus when you ask about food service when you arrive at 10pm.

Personally I like Mexico. There's usually food available somewhere, either at the hotel or in a taco stand around the corner. They treat you well, the hotels are nice, and so is the scenery.

Sleep is what you make of it....
