Tell you what we did, I used the HSA card and I planned on a worse case scenario (C section, 10 days in hospital) and used that figure. The birth went OK and I still ended up using the whole amount by June. WHAT YOU HAVE TO PLAN FOR ARE THE DOCTOR VISITS AFTER THE BIRTH. Dont forget that or youll find out the hard way like me.

Hope that helps.

No C-Section... but we had a normal birth with a 2 day stay. Here's the results from our birth on 09/13/06 through XJT's 90/10 plan:

Anesthesia (Epidural): $2,470
$121.90 after Benefits

Mother: $5,386
$534.38 after Benefits

Baby: $1,551.25
$84.90 after Benefits

Hope that gives you some idea.

You have a very sensible approach to childbirth but unfortunately there are circumstances which make natural childbirth less than ideal; however, the point is to get a healthy baby and mother out of the deal by whatever means are determined satisfactory at that point in time.
Thanks a lot for your concern.

Cool, like I said, c sections for the health of the baby or mother depends on the actual circumstances involved. I didnt intend to sound as if you guys were wrong for doing it. Im sure that was the case for you. In any case, good luck and congrats!

It doesnt take a doctor to deliver a baby.

Lap;

VBACs are fine and dandy, unless you are the 1% who has a uterine rupture and then dies because of massive blood loss. Lots of doctors won't even do them without tons of paperwork saying "just in case, we won't sue."

Like I said before, it all depends on the circumstances. C sections should be considered, for the most part, an emergency procedure. I was just talking about instances where doctors perform c sections just because of their convinience. Anyways, if you give birth at a hospital, you will more than like sign some papers that says something to the effect that you cant sue them.

Vbacks are actually against hospital policies in a lot of counties. Doctors do not like to do them because of liability.

We had a baby in June, and it was just one night of hospital stay. I think the cost for the baby in the nursery, circ, and birth was about 600-700 with the 90% EPO. If you can plan ahead, don't forget to put aside this money in your flex medical account. That will help.

Also, some hospitals will waive some of your co-pay if you ask to do it in payments. They will offer you a break if you pay the amount at that time. Hope this helps.

So we might be better off just paying more out of pocket and using my benefits.

Aren't benefits great? It's enough to make you drink.
I think you could use her benefits to have the kid and then since you would fall under a qualified life stlye change , you would then qualify for Express benefits again and you could then transition back without having to wait for the new year. You'll have 45 days from the birth of your child to return to Express benefits.
