Default Living near Newark

Are there any good (read: cheap, safe, and suburban) neighborhoods/cities within an hour or two drive of Newark? I'm trying to evaluate my options of IAH vs. EWR.

I live in Rutherford, NJ right now......it is very nice, easy to get to NYC, close to EWR (12 min drive), very safe, ........but not so cheap. A 1 bedroom apt is about 1,000. l rent a nice townhouse for $1,925/month.

There is a Bus out of ABE which is jumpseatable once you get the girls to like u at the terminal. :-) I prefer to drive rather than wait for the bus.

More to the point, If you're willing to drive 2 hours you have a lot of options. Go west on 78 or 80 and you're past Allentown (cheap) or into the Poconos (also pretty cheap) respectively. I also presume that you could rent a Jersey Shore home (off season) for pretty cheap. Those are all nice and safe areas.

Lot's of luck.
