One thing you might want to do is make sure everyone knows you are having a baby. Especially those whose kids are turning 2 because they'll probably want to get rid of a ton of stuff. If my kid was a little older, I'd be glad to give you all my furniture when I don't need it anymore. I can not imagine how much baby furniture, clothes and toys are just sitting in people's attics and garages collecting dust. Don't be shy to ask people with toddlers how they got theirs, it might lead into free furniture.

If you want to get quality furniture - try PALI. It's an Italian company, but they also have manufacturing facilities in Canada. While it is definitely not the cheapest crib or furniture you can find, it is definitely very well made and it's all real wood too. The set we got allows the conversion of the crib to a full bed later on.
