Finding health insurance and paying the premiums is not the issue. It's what happens when you have to use the health insurance that is the problem. For example, the 90/10 EPO from ExpressJet is the best we've ever had. Previous to that, we had an 80/20 indemnity plan, which basically was a joke. There was no "network", so there were no pre-negotiated fees. The insurance company paid up to what they felt was reasonable and customary and we were stuck with the rest, which did not count towards our out of pocket maximum for the year. Also, their modus operandi was to deny EVERY claim, no matter what, unless I called and verified, explained, begged, pleaded, and often the doctors ended up having to send additional written explainations. It was a PITA, but what was worse, this plan also ended up costing us 30 grand additioinally out of pocket in the space of 2 years, with all their "above reasonable and customary" BS.
That is why "health insurance" can be such a joke for so many people, and why sometimes you're better off uninsured. Had we not had insurance, we might have at least been able to qualify for some sort of state or federal program, or at least something. We'll be paying off medical debt for a LONG time....
Flash forward to 2007, and the BCBS 90/10 plan...out of pocket maximum for the family is 5,000. A lot of money, but our medical bills were well over 500,000 this year with a premature baby and some other unexpected yuckiness which is fortunately getting better now. So, we got off pretty cheap, and are thankful for XJT benefits every *@# day!
