Neitzsche said "God is dead."
Here's one explanation of what that means LINK and here's a second LINK
as you can see if you read both, his writing can be interpreted to mean whatever you think it means, as these two pages are conflicting. One thing is clear - he thought the idea of a god and the belief in god is idiotic, but helpful to mankind.

From Yariv's first link:
Quote:
New possibilities
Nietzsche believed there could be positive possibilities for humans without God. Relinquishing the belief in God opens the way for human's creative abilities to fully develop. The Christian God, with his arbitrary commands and prohibitions, would no longer stand in the way, so human beings might stop turning their eyes toward a supernatural realm and begin to acknowledge the value of this world. The recognition that "God is dead" would be like a blank canvas. It is a freedom to become something new, different, creative — a freedom to be something without being forced to accept the baggage of the past.

Yariv,
I don't know you, however, next time I see you in Houston I'm going to introduce myself. You always seem to say profound things.

There is ABSOLUTELY A GOD and we will all see that when this life is over, I can promise you this with all that I am. Those of you who don't believe, there will come a time when you have a life changing experience (I hope a good one and not a bad one) and you will know that God is real. I truely believe that even a person on the other side of the world sitting under a tree whom may have never heard of Christianity will have an opportunity to come to know God. I would lay my life on this, God Is Real.
