Default one other new buddy pass interesting fact

I know there are already a few threads about the buddy pass changes.... but mostly talking about $200 now for domestic travel... I thought it was interesting that not only that changed, but the other fares did too:

now travel to zone B is $200 each way. mexico is zone B. So for example, you want to take a buddy to Cancun... $400 for the buddy!

I just priced IAH-CUN and found seats for $318 on continental.

insane.

what they dont realize is that they will actually LOSE money. Buddy passes do not cost CAL anything. when there is an open seat that is otherwise LOST REVENUE, it is simply filled up last minute giving them an extra 55 bucks THAT OTHERWISE WOULD BE ZERO. yes they have to pay the extra few bucks in gas to carry the 200 lb person but that is negligible. Now that they cost more than regular tickets, people wont use them, and so that seat now goes empty bringing in no extra revenue!

Way to go LK, you are a genius!

Abso-stinking-lutely. If a buddy wants a buddy pass, find him or her a ticket on any airline but Continental.

AUS to IAH is a big buddy pass city pair, I always see quite a few buddy pass riders. It is cheaper by almost 100 bucks to buy a full fare ticket, 120 bucks per continental.com vs. 200 for the buddy pass. Absolutely ridiculous.

When we're at the gate in a groundstop and passengers approach and ask questions about why they might miss their connection to Europe/deep South America/Caribbean/Latin America/lower 48 I tell them how it is with EWR most days per week in the afternoon regardless of weather, I get real excited about the opportunity to answer.

They inevitably ask about how to prevent their situation from happening again.

I tell them of the vast network of flights that the top U.S. transatlantic carrier (that, by the way, flies 90% of its Atlantic flights with widebody airplanes with 1 middle seat per seven pax) has through a hub in the southeast and northeast. Or the stunning amount of connections that can be made through Amsterdam on a certain U.S. carrier with the best codeshare alliance in the world.

I don't stand there as a Continental Express pilot telling them to take their business elsewhere.

But I do give them all the information they request, and make it stupifyingly obvious as to how they ought to travel to Europe next time around.

When five businessmen stand there and wanna know why they're going to miss their business first seats to Germany, you can't tell them BS when they've told you they had planned for all afternoon in EWR so they could make their flight. Give them a good alternative to CAL/EWR, or they'll just go to a foreign airline. After a while they are going to take their business elsewhere anyway (after enough A to C bus rides and missed connections and days lost from their vacations/business trips) so you might as well give them a new way that keeps their money on a US carrier.

I'm actually thrilled by the increase in buddy pass fees! I fuking hated those things and I hated when my friends asked me for them. Buddy passes are a pain in the ***.

1) You have to constantly watch the loads the entire way so that your friends don't get stuck.
2) You have to continually lecture your friends about why they can't wear sandals, shorts, etc.
3) They don't understand how the system works, so they get irritated with you when they get left behind on a flight.
4) In addition to the pass travel fees, I get an additional $35 bucks (roughly) taken out of my paycheck in pass travel taxes--MOST PEOPLE DON'T REALIZE THIS.

Now I can honestly tell them that it is cheaper to just buy their own ticket...SO LEAVE ME ALONE!

I agree Yardley. I get so tired of trying to explain how things really are not messed up (they are) to people all the time. I'm sure they walk away thinking i'm full of it also. I'm gonna follow your advice.

This sucks for me, my sister used to use them all the time to see her fiance' (husband in 3 days) in galveston, $105 round trip from sdf or lex to iah. Now $210?!? Southwest goes to hobby for $175 round trip... That sucks! Also, from what i understand we can't change our travel companion until Nov. and it doesn't take effect until Dec. DAMMIT!!!
