Default International pass travel question

Here it is: On the south america flights (GYE and UIO) specifically, will they put oversells from coach into first? In other words, if there are 5 seats in first, but coach is oversold by 10, will I still be able to get on using a vacation pass for a first class seat? Or am I hosed becuase they'll give the oversold customers from coach a free upgrade? Does anyone have any experience with this? Planning a trip to GYE next week, and the the flights are oversold for coach but first is still open. Just wondering if I'll still be OK, or should we choose a different destination.

Not sure about the answer to this but I would highly suggest taking some ZED/ID90's with you. Remember they are FULLY refundable if you don't use them and they are MUCH easier to purchase at a hub pass travel office than at a foreign outstation...purchasing them from foreign gate agents can be difficult at best. It's good insurance. Have a good trip!

They don't upgrade to first class on international flights. Upgradeable elites still sit in the back.

*From what I understand. Correct me if I'm wrong.

That is true for Europe and Asia however it is not necessarily true for other destinations. I know I've seen upgradeable elites for EWR-Carribbean flts. Not sure about Mexico or Latin American.

Yes, they do upgrade elites on the south america flights, that much I found out. My question is, if coach is oversold (even if there are no upgrade elites) will they give the oversold coach pax a first class seat? Several of the flights have seats in first, but are oversold in coach. Would I still be able to get on? Also, there is no more ZED/ID90 with American I came to find out. Besides that won't help my travel companion either way.

They will upgrade on ANY route if it means getting all revenue pax on. An easy way to remember what destinations are not eligible for free upgrades is that if the aircraft has BusinessFirst there are no free upgrades. If it's just First Class i.e. Mexico, Canada then they will do upgrades. A few South American cities are eligible for upgrades excluding GIG, GRU and EGE.

Bottom line...if it has BusinessFirst then as a revenue pax you must pay to get it unless the back is oversold and at that point they upgrade by Elite level and then non-revs.
