Default Overheard on 28.55

A couple nights ago on EWR approach, the controller was slowing just about everyone down in a row because someone had declared an emergency (I think silverjet, but that's beside the point) and he needed more room. A Q- coming over Robinsville:

28.55: "Colgan XXXX I need you to keep the speed up, maintian 250 kts."
Colgan: "We're unable."
28.55: "Alright then what can you give me?"
Colgan: "Oh...about 246."

Quality...

I've heare ERJ drivers repeatedly, when asked their indicated speed(below 10,000) say things like "248" etc. I mean come on, just say 250. That's what everyone else is shooting for as well.

because some tool told them that to say 250 is to admit to violating a limitation becasue the redline is 250. Just sayin....

I thought these guys were going to be using 29 and lower altitudes to utilize unused airspace rather than get in line with everyone else?

Larry, if you're reading this is the difference between what looks good on paper and the real world.

...that's kinda like when you've been hugging redline for 1.5 on the way back from CLT, center calls for your speed and the NFP says .77 because your really around .775. Drives me nuts!

??? I will say .77 every time in that instance. Sorry to drive you nuts, but I think it's the better thing to say.

Here's how the rest of that conversation plays out since you are clueless:

Center: Can you increase that?
NFP: Sure, to .78
Center: Jetlink 2323 maintain Mach .78 or greater.

...and you give them 3 more knots and an hour worth of "Hi Steve"
