Default Super Small Eee PC Ultra Portable Notebook

A few weeks ago my FO stepped on my bag getting into the cockpit and crushed my laptop. Shame on me for leaving it there. Good thing I am a rich captain working at the finest regional out there, only $500 to fix it... I digress....

I decided to try the new umpc (Ultra mobile PC) by ASUS. They start at $300. You can read my review here: Yet Another Tech Blog

I have totally customized mine with a new more robust Linux OS (Xubuntu) and done a few other things. It is possible to install Windows XP on the devices. Anyway, if you would like to have a real cheap, real small laptop for on the road use check it out. For those that don't want to read my review just go to EeeUser.com » Unofficial ASUS Eee PC EeePC 701 Blog Forum Wiki Community to learn more.

CCS works fine but thing which require Internet Explorer do not. You pretty much have to use FireFox or Opera. Yes, CCSMAX works in Linux.

I'm out like a 10lb laptop....

Its funny that this just showed up, i actually just got one in the mail today from my girlfriend for my birthday. Love the thing. It's smaller than I thought, I'm still getting used to the keyboard, but it's not bad at all. I do like the linux OS and it's super fast to start up. I also like the flash memory so you can't scramble the hard drive. Also, skype comes preloaded for those of you who use it.

if price isn't a huge concern, can anyone recommend a small laptop that runs windows xp? I'm looking to get a new one but I only need it to check email and CCS. I'm looking for the smallest, lightest laptop I can find that still has a decent amount of power and can easily slide into the pocket of my rollerboard.

Sony PCG-TR3, it's about $2K but is an amazing piece of equipment. Easily fits in a flight bag.

For about half the price Averatec has the 1100 series (also with a 10" screen).

The Eee PC can run Windows XP, you just have to do the install yourself. The onboard FLASH memory is better for a laptop that you take on the road (as opposed to a conventional hard drive with moving parts). Eee PC 8G models are coming out "real soon" and it's my understanding that that would be enough space to dual boot linux and xp.

azpilot: your story sounds a lot like what happened to a CA that I met in MCI the other day ...and for everyone else, NO I wasn't the FO that stepped on his laptop!

AZPILOT

Do you think this machine is friendly enough for those of us that are not as tech savvy as you?
