azpilot: your story sounds a lot like what happened to a CA that I met in MCI the other day ...and for everyone else, NO I wasn't the FO that stepped on his laptop!

Yeah that was me! I'm a nice guy huh... Don't answer that.
For those looking for something slightly bigger HP is rumored to be coming out with a really cool UMPC. Look at these links. There will be a Linux and Windows version. Estimated around $600.00

Otherwise look at all the 12.1" laptops out there. Lenovo X60 is nice. At least mine was nice till it got stepped on!

I also like the flash memory so you can't scramble the hard drive. Also, skype comes preloaded for those of you who use it.
You have a nice girlfriend!!!
Can I have her????? Or take care of her while you're out flying???
Thanks

Haha, nope, I found her first fair and square. She's a caring nurturer too. I hope she doesn't find out that all i'm really going to be doing on it is looking at porn...
To the guy who asked about being tech savvy: The "eee" in "eeePC" stand for Easy to use, Easy to learn, Easy to play. So yeah, you could learn how to use it pretty easily. I just followed the instructions on the webside azpilot mentioned to switch it to advanced mode (out of easy mode). It runs in a somewhat windows style format now. A bit different, but if you're used to vista or XP it's not difficult and you can switch it back to easy mode. This thing is really only an internet computer. It's really only good for checking e-mail and surfing the web. If you are looking for a do it all computer, this is not it. But, it does what it's supposed to do and is cheap (not to mention tiny). For me, it was free

I'll let you try it in the ONT crewroom if I ever see you. Of course your so **** senior our schedules never cross paths! The default mode is very easy to use. It is designed for kids! Advanced mode is more like XP. Just read through some of the stuff on installing applications and I think that would help. There are some video on YouTube that might give you an idea of what things look like as well.

It does have OpenOffice on it. Freeware MS Office so to speak. You can open PDF files. The issue is storage. If you spend a little extra money you can get a 8-32GB SD card and you will have plenty of storage. For music I use Pandora.Com. As long as you have an Internet connection you are all set. Pandora rules! Type in Black Flag and you will know how I roll.
The point is if you don't want to lug a traditional notebook around but would like email, use CCS, etc this could be for you. Watching movies, etc maybe not. I am very interested in the HP 2133 which is rumored to come out in April.

HP UM2133 Shipping Soon
Ok folks. If you need a name you recognize and a machine with a slightly larger screen check out the HP 2133. It will be shipping soon from Amazon.
There are a couple of different models. Some run Linux and some Windows Vista. Most have a 120gb hard drive. All have a 8.9" screen and weigh around 2.6 lbs.
Most expensive is around $749. Cheap to get you something that is really small and really portable. Hey if you FO steps on it just buy a new one!
Amazon:
A couple of reviews:

ASUS Eee with 9" Screen and Windows XP should be out shortly as well.

It's nice to see that other manufacturers are going this route. BTW, I got my 8G about a month ago and loaded XP on it. I would NOT recommend doing that unless you're say...a reserve FO and have assloads of time to spend on it. Performance is better than I expected, however. The next model of Eee PC (larger screen and supposed to have windows on it already) should be the machine to get.
Oh yeah, ASUS may not be a household name but it certainly isn't a cheap brand. Their components (video cards, motherboards, etc) are some of the best you can buy. The "traditional" laptops they make are badass too.

Its funny how we all complain about people buying cheap plane tickets and wanting the world with it (first class meals, tv, etc.). But, when we buy stuff, or go on vacation, we buy the cheapest thing from whomever.
When I purchase a laptop, I dont purchase for weight, top-of-the-line performance, or how cheap it is. I look at a company that has quality customer service. Ive had too many problems talking to people in India. I will not purchase from a company that outsources their tech support. But, thats just me. Not everyone can be like me. Its a sad reality.
P.S. Sucks about your laptop. Its HIS fault. Did he ever apologize or ask to compensate you for it?
