This eases the mourning and explains what otherwise defies explanation. This is why religion is easy to sell and is so popular - it helps the weak deal with reality. (once again - no offense to anyone)
That's what I think too, but I would have liked an answer from a religious perspective. I am very skeptical of faith healing... surely your God doesn't favor anybody.. and why let a sick person stay on earth? If heaven is so beautiful, then why not call the "chosen" ones a little earlier? And of course there is going to be a standard answer for that.
The reason that there is religion, ironically enough, comes directly from the evolution (development) of the human brain. As soon as man became aware of his mortality, he started to look for a way to dealing with this, in the form of the super natural- God(s) and after life. Every unknown phenominum (like thunder) would be explained as something devine. The atheists in this forum, myself included, would have found ourselves in a very difficult situation, had we dared to explain thunderstorms, if we lived during the Greek and Roman empires. Religion has always resisted or twisted science, as we clearly see in this forum. Therefore, in my opinion, religion is a defense mechanism, Do I wish there were a heaven? Absolutely. The question is: "Do I want to hear the truth, or a good sounding lie?"
